ARCH 402 Foundation Studio Assignments
Assignment 3
This assignment asked us to study a simple industrial-style building in the area to study its tectonic parts and repurpose the space for a combination of new themes.
The existing building I selected is a storage building, and the new themes I consider to combine are wellness stuff and food stuff. After doing research, I decided to introduce sauna and hot spring baths as the main wellness program, along with a food program that is dedicated to healthy drinks.

The existing building is mainly made of concrete reinforced with steel bars covered with red and yellow tiles. Most storage space openings use shutter doors to give drive-up access. The roof uses precast concrete panels and waterproof coating on top. It is box-like but can be divided into 3 parts with changes in height. The edge of the roof attached pipes to drain rainwater to the ground.
Considering the more linear nature of my building space, after looking at the Japanese food conveyor belt sushi and nagashi somen, I came up with the idea of using a water channel to move the drinks through the space.
When designing the repurposed space, I decided to keep only the original exterior structure of the building and introduce two circulations that go in opposite directions for the two themes: from left to right is the wellness stuff, and right to left is the food stuff. Then I started to arrange different stuff used in each program and fit them into the space. On top of that, with the inspiration of the original inner wall grid-like layout, I used them as a reference to introduce the new inner wall but gave them different openings so that it is still one big connected space, while the program space, wall, and opening can create interesting space relationships.
